Trelleborg Open 2013:
Serbia dominates in Aaron Cook’s triumphant return
The Trelleborg Open 2013, one of the classic A-Class events on ETU’s calendar, concluded last Sunday in the Swedish city after two days of pure excitement and high class Taekwondo at the Söderslättshallen Arena.
Serbia, with 3 gold medals, 2 silvers and 3 bronzes, led the final standings of the competition, with Poland taking the second place with 2 golds, 3 silvers and 3 bronzes and Great Britain closing the podium with 2 golds, 1 silver and 4 bronzes.
Apart from the high level of all divisions, this year’s edition of the Trelleborg Open will also be remembered for Aaron Cook’s return to competition after the London 2012 affair with GB Taekwondo. The double European champion, who switched allegiance from Great Britain to the Isle of Man last December, made his debut representing his new team and showed everyone he hasn’t lost his powerful Taekwondo style, clinching the Men’s Welter title (-80 kg).
4 weight categories were decided on Saturday February 9th and the other 4 were held on Sunday 10th. In the Female’s Fin (-46 kg), the Ukrainian Iryna Romoldanova won the gold medal after defeating the Scottish Asia Bailey in the final by 5-3, with Mor Ofer from Israel and the Russian Mariia Smirnova sharing the bronze. The Men’s division (-54 kg) was won by the Greek Georgios Simitsis, who beat the Lithuanian Klemas Andrius in the gold medal match by withdrawal when the score was 10-1 for the Greek. The bronze medals were awarded to Giorgio Janmaat from Netherlands and Surachet Singsorn from Denmark.
Female’s Fly (-49 kg) title was taken by another Ukrainian athlete, Ganna Soroka, who won the final match over her compatriot Yuliya Volkova (4-2). They had beaten Georgia Barnes from Great Britain and the Austrian Natascha Mitrovits respectively in the semi-finals, who both shared the third step of the podium. In the Male’s modality (-58 kg), the Polish Jaroslaw Mecmajer had to give his best to get rid of the Swiss Mehdi Amhand in the crucial fight (5-4), leaving the bronze medals for Raul Fuentes from Sweden and Moti Lugasi from Israel.
The Women’s Bantam category (-53 kg) was dominated by Dragana Gladovic from Serbia, who struggled to win the title in front of the local Pauline Lovgren (5-4), with Tanja Pasanen from Finland and Ekaterina Vanyamova from Russia clinching the third places. The Men’s (-63 kg) gold was won by the Belgian Jaouad Achab, who clearly beat the Spanish Eduardo Longobardi in the final match by 9-3. Jure Pantar (SLO) and Viacheslav Storchak (UKR) had to content themselves with the bronze medal.
The first local gold medal was taken by Nikita Glasnovic (SWE), who need a sudden death point in the extra period of the final to defeat Martina Zubcic from Croatia (1-0). The Polish athltes Magdalena Leporowska and Emilia Dabrowska clinched two bronzes for their country. In the Male’s draw (-68 kg), Vasilii Nikitin from Russia gave no option to his opponent in the final, the Serbian Ivan Puresevic, who lost against the Russian by a clear 7-1. The British fighters Michael Harvey and George Lee shared the lower step of the podium.
The first division decided on Sunday, Female’s Light (-62 kg), was won by the Russian Marina Cheshuina, who got rid of the Polish Aleksandra Uscinska in the final. The local athlete Elin Johansson and the Serbian Milica Vukolic were awarded with the bronze medals. In the Male’s category, Damir Fejzic took the gold in front of the British Ben Haines, with Ivan Karajlovic from Serbia and Alon Elboher from Israel also clinching the podium.
The Polish Katarzyna Lis beat her compatriot Aleksandra Krzemieniecka in the final combat of the Female’s Welter (-67 kg) division, leaving the bronzes to Iveta Jirankova from Czech Republic and Tasha Pruter from USA. As mentioned previously, Aaron Cook dominated the Men’s Welter category (-80 kg) in front of Armin Gredic from Bosnia and Herzegovina, silver, and Piotr Pazinski (POL) and Ruebyn Richards (GBR), who shared the bronze.
The Olympic champion at London 2012, Milica Mandic, gave no chance to her opponents in the Women’s Middle division (-73 kg), adding another gold medal to her track record. Reshmie Oogink won the silver for Netherlands, while her compatriot Mandy Barbic took the bronze together with Maria Johansson from Sweden. The British Damon Sansum was the winner of the Male’s title (-87 kg), leaving the silver to Djordje Marcetic from Serbia and the bronzes for the representatives of Netherlands, Jeroen Wanrooij and Michael Oogink.
The second gold for Great Britain was won by Bianca Walkden, who took the Women’s Heavy title (+73 kg) after beating Edines Kurtovic from Austria in the final. The local Sara Zederfeldt and the Serbian Ana Bajic were awarded with the bronze medals. The Danish Zakaria Asidah defeated Piotr Hatowski from Poland to win the gold in the Men’s division (+87 kg), leaving the bronze medals to Cristoph Decker from Austria and the local fighter Samuel Westermark.
