WTF moves closer to establishing Para-Taekwondo classification code

The WTF has moved closer to establishing a para-taekwondo classification system in line with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Classification Code, following a four-day research project from 21 January 2014 in Moscow, Russia – the latest step in the federation’s bid for inclusion on the 2020 Paralympic Programme.
The WTF was closely supported by the European Para-Taekwondo Union (EPTU), the Russian Taekwondo Union and the Russian Paralympic Committee during the project. Research into para-taewkondo classification began at the end of last year in Korea. But in Moscow, the WTF conducted specific sport analysis on para-taekwondo athletes for the first time. A total of 16 athletes from Russia, France and Turkey, representing the current taekwondo kyorugi classes, were tested at the Russian national team training centre in Moscow.
The results of the research will be compared to the findings of the first stage of the research conducted on able-bodied athletes at Yong In University in December last year. Sport-class profiles will be drafted based on the results of the research and included in the WTF Para-Taekwondo Classification Code to be presented for deliberation at the WTF General Assembly in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei on 19 March 2014.
Athletes and coaches involved in the testing were also invited to give their feedback on the classification and competition system. Amongst the suggestions put forward to maximize the promotion of the sport were the creation of more para-taekwondo competitions, a ranking system and an increased national quota.
Representatives of the WTF, the WTF Para-Taekwondo Committee and the EPTU also met with the President of the Russian Paralympic Committee, Mr. Vladimir Lukin, and First Vice President, Mr. Pavel Rozhkov, at the Russian Paralympic Committee office in Moscow, during the visit.
During the meeting the current status of para-taekwondo in Europe was discussed as well as the future development of para-taekwondo kyorugi for limb deficiency athletes and para-taekwondo poomsae for athletes with intellectual, visual or neurological impairments.
On the final day, WTF representatives met with the President of the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD), Dr. Valery Rukhledev, to discuss the development of the WTF Sanctioned World Deaf-Taekwondo Championships.
