24 Tickets for 32 Passengers in the Waiting List;
Spectacular Challenge of Taekwondo Elites for Olympic Quota on 5 & 6 Dec.
Grand Prix Final will be held on 5 & 6 Dec. 2015 in Mexico City while only 24 out of 32 invited athletes will gain the direct 2016 Olympic Games quota.
Difficult path of gaining direct Olympic quota will end in the last station of Final Grand Prix in Mexico, where 6 out of 8 invited athletes in each weight category will get the ticket of Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
3 first ranked athletes of each Olympic weight category are almost sure about their quota but 4th to 8th placed athletes have a complicated and unpredictable challenge ahead.
In Grand Prix Final, that features the motto “Here Come the Champions”, the following countries have representatives in the male category: Iran, South Korea, Germany, Mexico, Belgium, Russia, England, Uzbekistan, Portugal, Spain, Moldova, France, Gabon, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Argentina. Iran is the only country that has 5 representatives in 4 weight categories and has the chance of achieving 4 quotas. South Korea has 5 athletes in 3 weight categories followed by Germany and Mexico that have 3 athletes in 3 weight categories each. Belgium and Russia have 2 athletes in 2 weight categories and England and Uzbekistan have 2 representatives in 1 weight category which means they have the chance to seize 1 quota.
Portugal, Moldova, France, Gabon, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Argentina have 1 athlete in 1 weight category each.
The invited athletes from Iran are Farzan Ashourzadeh, -58 kg, Behnam Asbaghi, -68 kg, Mahdi Khodabakhshi and Masoud Hajizavareh, -80 kg and Sajjad Mardani, +80 kg.
Final Grand Prix is a G-8 event which adds 80 Olympic ranking points to Gold medalists, 48 points to Silver medalists, and 28.8 points to Bronze medalists.
The notable point about this event is that each weight category has only 1 Bronze medalist since losers on semi-final round will fight and finally one of them will stand on the third place podium.
By the end of this event, the Marathon of gaining direct Olympic quota will end and after calculating the points WTF will announce the 6 athletes of each category that could win the ticket of 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
It should be added that in 2012 Olympic Games, each MNA could gain only 4 quota for both males and females but according to the standing procedure for Rio 2016, each NOC can achieve up to 8 quotas for males and females in case they have 8 representatives among 6 highest ranked athletes of each weight category.
Countries that achieve 4 male and female quotas through Olympic ranking system are not allowed to participate in the Continental Qualification Tournaments anymore.
Iran female team did not have any athletes among 8 highest ranked athletes of the female categories and is therefore getting prepared to send 2 representatives to Asian Qualification Championships to achieve 2 quotas by winning Gold or Silver medal of this event.
