Top Rank with Gold Taste

Mexico City is hosting Grand Prix Final in less than a week and 24 athletes that can enter Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be announced.

In the male category, Iran has 5 representatives in 4 Olympic weight categories. Farzan Ashourzadeh will fight in -58 kg, Behanm Asbaghi in -68 kg, Mahdi Khodabakhshi and Masoud Hajizavareh in -80 kg and Sajjad Mardani in +80 kg.

Iran Taekwondo Federation introduces the opponents of Iranian athletes in GP Final and announces the athletes whose Olympic Games quota is confirmed.

Farzan Asourzadeh is Iran’s representative in -58 kg who is standing on the 1st Olympic ranking by gaining 15 medals in the last 2 years.

No one could imagine this athlete who started fighting in the senior category from 2014 could overtake the athletes that had started this challenge from 2012 and gain the highest rank in this weight category.

*** 8 top athletes of -58 kg

Farzan Ashourzadeh from Iran (19 years old)

Important achievements: Gold medal of 2015 World Championships, Gold medal of 2014 Asian Championships and Asian Games, 3 Gold medals, 1 Silver medal and 1 Bronze medal of 2014 and 2015 GPs.

In 2014, Farzan rose from 5th Olympic ranking to 1st place after overcoming 1 representative of Portugal and 2 from South Korea in 2014 GP Final and received the title of Tsunami from WTF and defended his place with his great achievements afterward.

In 2015 GP Final, Farzan will face Lucas Guzman from Argentina in his first match and will fight with the winner of the match between Cesar Rodriguez from Mexico and Levent Tuncat from Germany. On the other side of the bracket, one of the representatives of South Korea, Portugal or Belgium will proceed to final round. Farzan should meet one of these athletes to fight for the Gold medal.

Farzan’s quota for 2016 Olympic Games is already confirmed considering his 442.1 ranking points which has 223.64 differences from the sixth person.

Although Farzan does not need the points of Final GP he says, ‘I will do my best in this event and try to have a great achievement. My most important goal is winning the Gold medal of the Olympic Games.’

Tae-hun Kim from South Korea (21 years old)

Important achievements: 2 Gold medals in 2013 and 2015 World Championships, Gold medal of 2014 Asian Championships and Asian Games, 1 Gold medal, 1 Silver medal and 3 Bronze medals of 2013, 2014 and 2015 GPs.

In 2014 Final GP, Tae-hun lost the semi final round 13-7 to Farzan Ashourzadeh, but after a year he won Mohammad Kazemi 11-10 in 2015 World Championships and Armin Hadipour 14-13 in 2015 World Championships. If he can win his opponents in Final GP, he will face Farzan. Like Farzan, his Olympic quota is confirmed, considering his 192 points difference from 6th ranked athlete in -58 kg weight category.

Rui Branganca from Portugal (24 years old)

Important achievements: Silver medal of 2011 World Championships, Gold medal of 2014 European Championships, Gold medal of 2015 European Games, 1 Gold medal and Bronze medal of 2014 and 2015 GPs.

In 2014 Final GP, Rui lost 14-2 against Farzan. He will not face Farzan until final round in Final GP. He has 288.96 points difference from 6th ranked athlete and his quota is, therefore, confirmed.

Levent Tuncat from Germany (27 years old)

Important achievements: 3 Gold medals and 1 Silver medal of European Championships, Bronze medal of 2015 European Games, 1 Silver medal and 1 Bronze medal of 2015 GPs, Participation in Beiging Olympic Games.

If Levent wins his match against Mexico, he will fight with the winner of the match between Farzan and the representative of Argentina. He participated in a joint camp with Iran before 2015 World Championships and could gain 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medal in 2015. He gained the Bronze medal of 2015 World Championships after losing 10-5 to Farzan in semi-final round.

There will be a spectacular challenge among 4th to 8th ranked athletes, because one athlete will be omitted among representatives of Germany, Mexico, Belgium and Argentina. On the other hand, as each country could gain 1 quota in each weight category, 1 of the representatives of Korea will be also omitted.

Cesar Rodriguez from Mexico (21 years old)

Important achievements: Gold medal of 2014 Pan American Games, Bronze medal of 2014 GP.

Cesar did not have a good performance in the recent year and could not win any medal in 3 GPs in 2015 and 2015 World Championships. If he loses the match to Germany, he will have a hard time because in case the representative of Argentina wins against Farzan all equations of this weight category will be broken.

Tae-moon Cha from South Korea (24 years old)

Important achievements: Gold medal of 2013 World Championships, Silver medal of 2014 GP Final.

Tae-moon is the second reprehensive of Korea in this weight category. He did not have an eye-catching performance in the last year. In 2014 Final GP, he lost against Farzan 20-8 and gained a Silver medal. He did not participate in 2015 World Championships and received no medal in 3 GPs of 2015.

As each country could achieve 1 quota in each weight category, only one of the representatives of Korea will enter Rio 2016. In case Tae-hun Kim gets injured, Korea might send Tae-moon to the Olympic Games instead.

Si Mohamed Ketbi from Belgium (18 years old)

Important achievements: Bronze medal of 2014 Youth Olympic Games, Silver medal of 2015 World Championships, Bronze medal of 2015 European Games.

Si Mohamed was not among 32 top ranked athletes in 2014 and was not eligible for participation in GPs. In 2015, after winning the medal of World Championships and several achievements in other Tournaments, he could reach the top 8 athletes of -58 kg.

He has faced Farzan 2 times so far. In Fujairah Open, he lost 3-0 and in final round of World Championships he was beaten 8-3.

Lucas Guzman from Argentina (21 years old)

Important achievements: Silver medal of 2014 Pan American Championships, Bronze medal of 2015 Pan American Games, 3 Bronze medals of GPs.

Undoubtedly, one of the most attractive matches of GP Final will be the fight of Lucas and Farzan because if Lucas loses the match against Farzan, he will be deprived of direct Olympic quota and will be obliged to gain the quota through Continental Qualification Tournament. He has not fought with Farzan so far. Farzan believes that Iran, South Korea, Portugal, Mexico, Germany and Belgium will achieve direct Olympic quota of 2016 Olympic Games.

Gold, Silver and Bronze medalists of GP Final will gain 80, 48 and 28.8 Olympic ranking points respectively. After this event, the 6 highest ranked athletes of -58 kg will win the direct quota of 2016 Olympic Games.
