Gorilla Open 2013:
Rwanda holds a successful inaugural edition
The Rwanda Taekwondo Federation held last 12th of January its first annual Gorilla Open Taekwondo Championships in the city of Kigali (Rwanda).
Players and officials from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Uganda, Kenya, and host country Rwanda took part in this inaugural edition of the event.
The RTF decided to organize a quality event in East and Central Africa in collaboration with the World Taekwondo Federation and the Africa Taekwondo Union. The Gorilla Open 2013 was the first tournament in the region to use Daedo PSS (Protector and Scoring System) to help the officials decide the final score of all matches. The RTF would like to thank the Spanish company Deado for its help in purchasing the system.
The organizer and Director of the tournament, Rwanda’s National Team coach Martin Koonce, stated that he was “very pleased” with the course of the tournament, as it brought “a higher level of competition to the entire region of East and Central Africa”. He also expressed his wish that it will “contribute to accentuate the growth of Taekwondo not only in Rwanda but in the whole region”.
Coach Koonce is looking forward to attend the first ever East African Championships, which will also be held in Kigali between the 22nd and 23rd of February. The Gorilla Open Taekwondo Championships 2013 was sponsored by the local NGO Africa Transformation Network. Gorilla Open Taekwondo Championships 2013 complete results: Men’s -54kg
