The Reykjavik International Games were held for the 6th time in the capital of Iceland between the 17th and the 27th of January 2013.
This year’s edition was the the first one in which Taekwondo was included in the official program of the event, gathering together around 180 competitors from 7 different countries.
The competition covered both Kyorugi and Poomsae modalities with a strong international line-up in both disciplines. Before the start of the competition, the Icelandic Taekwondo Federation held a Kyorugi training camp under the guidance of Mr. Mario Dujic, the coach of the Serbian National Team, and Poomsae one with Mr. Sergio Ramos and Ms. Edina Lents as the Masters.
Date/Time Date(s) - 19.01.2013 - 20.01.2013 All Day Mr. Chakir Chelbat also held a referee seminar in Reykjavik during the Games and was the head referee for the Kyorugi tournament. The Icelandic Taekwondo Federation used the occasion to thank Mr. Chelbat, who has visited the country several times to support the Federation, for all his efforts and the time he’s given them in order to improve the situation of Taekwondo in Iceland. The Icelandic Taekwondo Federation did also thank Ms. Edina Lents for having significantly increased the quality of the Poomsae training and competition in Iceland.
The Minister of Education, Science and Culture of Iceland, Mrs. Katrín Jakóbsdóttir, also visited the tournament to receive the recognition from the Icelandic Taekwondo Federation for her invaluable support to Taekwondo in Iceland.
Taekwondo is currently a fast growing sport in Iceland, where it has become the largest self defence sport. The fact that it is now an integral part of the annual Reykjavik International Games will further solidify its standing within the Icelandic sporting arena, and taking into account the quality of the young athletes in the sport, the Icelandic Federation hopes to see worldclass competitors emerge in the near future from the land of fire and ice.
